This blue commemorative plaque records: Hexham station. On 9th March 1835, Hexham Station was opened by the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway, which became part of the North Eastern Railway in 1862. The original station was probably designed by the architect Benjamin Green of Newcastle upon Tyne. It was altered and extended between 1835 and 1871 and again by 1901. Listed Grade II and standing in a Conservation Area, the present station was restored in 1998/1999.
Benjamin Green was an architect from Newcastle upon Tyne, historically significant for designing Hexham railway station, which played a crucial role in the development of transportation infrastructure in northern England during the early Victorian era.
