This blue commemorative plaque records: Hertha Ayrton engineer, physicist and inventor. First woman to be nominated as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Suffragette and vigorous supporter of Women's right. Born in Portsea on the site of this building in 1854.
Hertha Ayrton was an engineer, physicist, and inventor who became the first woman to be nominated as a Fellow of the Royal Society, recognized for her work on electric arcs and ripples in sand and water. She was also an active suffragette and advocate for women's rights.
