Hertford Street, Coventry grey plaque

This grey commemorative plaque records: Hertford Street. Constructed in 1812 following an Act of Parliament for 'improving the public roads and through the city of Coventry'. Prior to this traffic to and from Warwick had to use the narrow congested Greyfriars Lane. The name refers to the Marquis of Hertford, who was then the owner of Cheylesmore Park, on the south of the city. Hertford Street was closed to vehicular traffic in 1969.

Hertford Street, constructed in 1812 under an Act of Parliament, significantly improved Coventry’s road network by providing a wider route for traffic compared to the previous narrow Greyfriars Lane. The street was named after the Marquis of Hertford, who owned Cheylesmore Park, and it remained open to vehicular traffic until 1969.
