Hertford Castle first rose after 1066 to control the river, but it became a royal stage when the Black Prince brought the captured French King there in 1359. The prisoner lived like a king, attended mass at Bengeo, and paid ten shillings for a sow killed by his hounds. John of Gaunt later married Constanza of Castile at the castle, woven it into the Duchy of Lancaster, and left it vulnerable when York took Lancaster in the War of the Roses.
