What is recorded here

Hertford Castle Gate House stands in East Hertfordshire as the last visible fragment of a castle that once controlled entry to the town. Its thick walls and narrow openings suggest a place built to watch, restrict and survive rather than impress. Much of the castle has vanished, but the gate house remains sharp enough to imagine the guards, carts and decisions that passed through it.
Hertford Castle Gate House is shown as a castle on the public map of East Hertfordshire. The saved point is the map point or the centre of its mapped shape.
Hertford Castle Gate House was part of the original Hertford Castle, built in the 11th century by the Normans, and later held by various noble families, including the powerful De Vere Earls of Oxford. It is remembered as a key historical structure in the development of Hertford town and as a symbol of medieval power and administration in the region.
