Herstmonceux Castle stands two miles south-east of the village as a scheduled monument and former Royal Observatory, Greenwich site. Canadian students from the Bader International Study Centre still move through its rooms, while the Observatory Science Centre and Herstmonceux Mediaeval Festival keep the grounds occupied. The castle has changed owners and purposes so often that it belongs less to one era than to the many eras that kept finding a use for it.
