This blue commemorative plaque records: Bishopstowe built in 1841 as the home of Henry Phillpotts Bishop of Exeter 1831-1860 was opened in 1921 by George Hands, as The Palace Hotel Recorded plaque organisation: Torbay Civic Society.
Henry Phillpotts served as the Bishop of Exeter from 1831 to 1860 and was a significant figure in the Church of England; his former residence, Bishopstowe, later became The Palace Hotel in Torquay. George Hands, who opened Bishopstowe as The Palace Hotel in 1921, contributed to the transformation of the building from a religious leader's home into a prominent local establishment.
