This blue commemorative plaque records: The Castle Keep. Principal tower of the castle built by Henry II in 1168-78. The City's name derives from the earlier castle on the site which was founded in 1080 by Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror. Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror, founded a castle in 1080 that gave the city its name. His younger brother, King Henry II of England, later constructed the Castle Keep between 1168-78, significantly fortifying the site and asserting royal control over the region.
