Haverfordwest Castle occupies a narrow ridge above the town, marking the place where Norman and Flemish forces clashed with Welsh princes from the twelfth century onward. Gilbert de Clare is named as its founder in 1120, while other accounts give that role to Tancred the Fleming; either way the castle became a Marcher instrument for controlling Pembrokeshire. Its stones have endured royal visits, Welsh attacks and centuries of changing use, keeping the ridge occupied long after the original timber hall disappeared.

Haverfordwest Castle was built by the de Briouze family in the late 12th or early 13th century and later held by the Crown following the revolt of 1265.
