Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Muddy feet may have trod the motte while kings argued distance and law. The bailey stood beside it, a wooden ring for people who refused to leave the land empty. Hardwick Hall appears later in the story, but this is the first draft: earth lifted, timber joined, and human choice making a castle visible.
The National Heritage List for England records Hardwick castle motte and bailey castle 140m WSW of Hardwick Hall as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built in the late 11th or early 12th century, Hardwick Castle was likely constructed by a Norman lord to establish control over the local area following the Norman Conquest. It is remembered as an example of early medieval military architecture and for its historical association with the strategic development of the region.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
