Hangman's Crag is a basalt sea cliff formed during the Paleogene period, around 60 to 55 million years ago, as a result of volcanic activity associated with the opening of the North Atlantic. It is notable for its resistant columnar jointing and exposure of igneous rock, typical of the Edinburgh basalt formations.
