Hafton Castle stands on the southern shore of the Holy Loch, a two-storey house with a taller tower that David Hamilton designed in the late eighteenth century. James Hunter lived there with his wife, children and seven female servants, turning a remote coastal estate into a busy household where young lives grew up beside the water. The name still sounds like a fortress, but the rooms were likely warm, crowded and ordinary, filled with the noise of a family learning to call the loch home.
