Gwydir Castle is a fortified manor house built around 1500 on the floodplain edge of the river Conwy, where post-Roman kingdoms bled each other in AD 610 and AD 954 before the Wynn family made it the centre of a thirty-six thousand acre deer park. The courtyard still holds a spiral staircase taken from Maenan Abbey, and the gatehouse bears John Wyn ap Maredudd’s initials above the date 1555. Charles I may have sat in that house in 1645, and the young George V and Mary may have walked the yew path in 1899, but the older truth is the land itself: low, wet, patient, and marked by every foot that crossed it.
