Guildford Castle rose from a Norman motte shortly after the 1066 invasion, its thick Bargate stone keep guarding the town with a windowless ground floor and a private royal chamber above. Soldiers likely watched the roads from that height while kings rested in the warm upper rooms, turning a local hill into a instrument of conquest. The ruined shell still stands beside the later tower, preserving the shape of that violent birth and the quiet human life that moved through its chambers.
