This blue commemorative plaque records: Freeman & Guilds. The Freemen are the members of Chester's Guilds, first recorded c.1200. Only Freemen could trade freely within the city and vote for the Corporation. They still hold their bi-annual services at the Guild Church of St Peter.
The Freemen of Chester were members of medieval guilds, essential for local trade and governance as they alone could trade freely and vote for city officials; the Guild Church of St Peter continues to host their important ceremonial gatherings.
