No more than two cottages, a farm and a water tower still stand in Green Hailey, yet the small Buckinghamshire place was chosen for an experimental television relay station in 1949. The tower rises above a landscape so quiet it seems to hold its breath, waiting for signals that may have carried the first flickering images into ordinary homes.
