What is recorded here
Green Castle is a medieval earthwork on the Portknockie coast where iron-age palisades, Pictish ramparts and nineteenth-century fish-drying platforms are buried beneath one another like layers of a forgotten kitchen. The cliff still breathes out charcoal and charred beam-ends, and the flat top remains wide enough for footsteps, net poles and the shadow of someone hanging jerseys in the wind. What was defended, smelted and dried there has not gone; it has only been redealt into new uses along the same narrow ridge.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Green Castle as Earthwork (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Green Castle is a medieval earthwork castle in Scotland, likely built in the 13th or 14th century, and is remembered as an example of early defensive architecture in the region. Its precise location and builder remain unidentified, but it contributes to the understanding of Scotland's medieval landscape.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
