Graveyard in Kilcarragh

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Kilcarragh, a quiet church in County Clare, Ireland, has a graveyard hidden in its walls. A single grave slab, 1.71 metres long and 0.64 metres wide, lies inside the church building. Older writings called it a grave near the church, which means people may have buried their dead on the land around it before the walls went up. The church kept the grave safe, but the graveyard itself disappeared under time and stone.
On a low natural rise in undulating limestone outcrop. A single graveslab (1.71m x 0.64m) lies within Kilcarragh Church (CL016-012001-). According to Swinfen (1992, 34) this was recorded previously as being 'near the church' indicating that there may have been a graveyard here. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 20 May 2015
