Graveslab

What is recorded here

Graveslab in Kilcoolyabbey is a graveslab in Kilcoolyabbey, County Tipperary, Ireland. The damaged limestone slab measures 1.88m long, 0.7m wide at the top and 0.58m wide at the base, tapering downward without a chamfered edge. Relief carving shows a banded seven-armed floriated cross with a three-bar knop at the base of the cross head and a curving Calvary mount beneath the shaft. Two interlocked rectangular bands fall vertically from a horizontal position beneath the knop, while the plain margin retains no inscription trace.
Formerly secured to the S wall of the chancel of Kilcooly Abbey (TS043-034001-), within the westernmost recess, this currently lies recumbent in the third vaulted chamber of the E range. A limestone rectangular slab (L 1.88m; Wth at top 0.7m; Wth at base 0.58m; T 0.22m), tapering towards the base, with no chamfered edge. The decoration, carved in relief, consists of a banded seven-armed floriated cross, with a three bar knop at the base of the cross head, the shaft resting on a curving Calvary mount. The banding consists of two rectangular interlocked bands which fall vertically from a horizontal position beneath the knop. The plain margin around the edge of the slab bears no trace of an inscription. This graveslab is in very poor condition. The upper sinister corner of the slab has broken off, and the entire decorated surface of the slab is breaking away as a horizontal layer from the rest of the slab and is badly cracked and broken.
