Graveslab

What is recorded here

Graveslab in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.) is a fragment of a 16th-century chest tomb, not a complete monument or a newly made marker. It is composed of fossiliferous limestone and belongs to St Mary's parish church in Kilkenny. The fragment appeared when a 1740 blocking was removed from the S nave arcade, suggesting the church had hidden an older death beneath a later closure. It is now stored in the NE corner of the S side of the graveyard, waiting to be read rather than displayed.
