Graveslab in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.)

Graveslab

What is recorded here

Isabella Lanigan lies beneath a reused limestone slab in the north transept of St Mary's, her name cut in Lombardic script before the stone became a prayer step for another tomb. The church kept her marker alive by building upon it, turning a grave into a foundation for continued worship. What began as a boundary for her body became a surface for kneeling, suggesting that memory and devotion could share one stone.
At St Mary's parish church (KK019-026115-) in Kilkenny. An inscribed graveslab (L 0.86m), made from fossiliferous limestone, reused as part of the plinth or prayer step of a chest-tomb (KK019-026312-) in the central tomb niche of the N wall of the N transept of the church. Found during excavations (12E0314) at St Mary's by Cóilín Ó Drisceoil (2019). The Latin inscription in incised Lombardic script reads: HIC IACET: ISABLLA: LÃG HÃ which translates as, Here lies Isabella Lanigan(?). Compiled by: Cóilín Ó Drisceoil Date of upload: 21 November 2022
Medieval Christian tomb slab; 14th–15th century. Reused in a later chest-tomb, it reflects the continuity of burial practices and stone reuse common in Irish ecclesiastical contexts.
