Graveslab in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.)

Graveslab

What is recorded here

Graveslab in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.) is a cut limestone slab bearing the partial Latin name N… and now supporting a medieval font inside St. John's C of I Cathedral. It moved from St Mary's church to become a pedestal, turning death into a base for baptism. The missing part of the name may belong to someone whose identity was forgotten before the stone was reused.
Formerly in St Mary's church in Kilkenny city (see KK019-026259-) (Devine and Ó Drisceoil 2005, vol. 1, 17-18). Currently in St. John's C of I Cathedral (see TS061-025102-), at the NE end of the nave, immediately S of the chancel.  A graveslab reused as the pedestal for a medieval font (TS061-025101- and KK019-026258-). The pedestal consists of the upper dexter portion (dims 0.88m x 0.88m; H 0.21m) of a reused limestone graveslab. This graveslab was originally much larger, but has been machine cut along the sinister side and base to form its present square shape. It is bears an incised latin inscription 'Hic jacet N…' in lombardic script. This translates as: Here lies N…. .   Compiled by: Jean Farrelly
