Graveslab in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.)

Graveslab

What is recorded here

Death itself became a doorway when builders set the graveslab fragment into the lancet window of St Mary’s parish church in Kilkenny. The fossiliferous limestone still carries its incised cross head, arms ending in circular roundels, marking someone buried in the 13th or 14th century before the stone was given a second purpose. To stand beneath that window is to look through a life already lived, remembered twice: once in burial, once in building.
At St Mary's parish church (KK019-026115-) in Kilkenny, re-used as a jamb in the lancet window on the E wall (exterior) of the S transept (Bradley 1980, 11, no. 29). A fragment of a 13th/14th-century graveslab, composed of fossiliferous limestone, decorated with an incised cross head in which the arms terminate in circular roundels (ibid.). The dimensions have not been ascertained because of the fragment's inaccessibility. Compiled by: Cóilín Ó Drisceoil Date of upload: 11 January 2023
13th/14th-century Christian graveslab; re-used as a jamb in a church window. Significance lies in its medieval date and reuse, indicating continuity of sacred space and material culture in Kilkenny.
