You can still see the shallow cross-shaft cut into the western wall of St. Mary’s graveyard, a fragment of a thirteenth or fourteenth-century graveslab reused in an 1804 cross wall. The fossiliferous limestone is not smooth or proud; it is broken, embedded and exposed to the weather like a bone half-swallowed by the earth. Whoever lay beneath it has lost their name, but the church kept the shape of their marking and carried it into a newer wall.
