Graveslab in Eanach Dhúin preserved two broken, inscriptionless tombstones discovered beneath church rubbish in County Galway. One unhewn flag lay hidden under a sycamore nearly filling the choir, while the other wore a fleur-de-lis ornament. They emerged not as monuments to named lives but as discarded fragments, waiting for someone to notice what the church had buried.

Wilde (1867, 69) recorded the discovery of ‘two remarkable tombstones’ in the rubbish that had accumulated under the site of the chancel arch of the church (GA069-001013-). Both were ‘broken and without inscriptions’. One was ‘an unhewn, irregularly shaped flag, 27 inches [0.68m] by 20 [0.5m], lying underneath a sycamore tree, that nearly fills the choir’, and the other, ‘bearing a fleur-de-lis ornament’ (see GA069-001021-) was visible a short distance from it.
