Graveslab in Callan South lies flush beneath the feet of St Mary’s church, marking the buried bodies of John Mylott and his son around 1525. Its seven-armed cross and worn Latin letters still protrude through centuries of traffic, turning ordinary worship into a quiet act of remembrance.

Lying flush with the floor slabs in the centre of the chancel of St Mary’s church (KK026-010012-), Callan. A badly worn floriated and banded limestone slab (L 1.72m; Wth 0.74m) which is almost intact, though the uppermost portion consisting of the border (H c. 0.1m) appears to be missing, broken horizontally across the top. Below the centre of the slab there are several cracks across its surface. The slab is decorated in raised relief with a seven-armed segmented cross-head with fleur-de-lys terminals. There is a circular knop beneath the cross-head. The cross-shaft rests on a curving cross-base. On either side of the cross-shaft there is a vertical band. A Latin inscription in raised Black Letter script is visible along the border, beginning on the upper sinister side and continuing along that side. It has been transcribed by Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 298) as, ‘Hic jacet Johes My….tt et fili ei Dns Johes Mylott’ and translated by him as, ‘Here lie John Mylott and his son, Mr. John Mylott’. Carrigan (ibid.) suggests that the ‘Dns’ placed before the second John Mylott’s name may indicate that he was an ecclesiastic and he dates this graveslab to c. 1525.
