What is recorded here

Graveslab in Callan South lies broken into three lichen-covered pieces near the west end of St Mary’s church, preserving only a cross-shaft and part of a knop. It is not a display object or a complete monument, but a buried identity half-erased, waiting to be recognized. The missing cross-head and absent inscription suggest that memory itself has fractured, leaving behind shape without name.

Lying prostrate towards the W end of the centre aisle of the nave of St Mary’s church (KK026-010012-), Callan. The centre portion of a limestone slab (total L 0.85m; Wth 0.57m; min. T 0.14m) which is broken into three pieces (upper dexter piece L 0.26m; Wth 0.17m; lower dexter piece L 0.6m; Wth 0.39m; upper sinister piece L 0.51m; Wth 0.4m). The lichen-covered slab appears to be tapering. It is decorated with an incised cross-shaft and the lower portion of a knop which would have been under the missing cross-head. The edge of the slab is chamfered (Wth 0.08m). There is no visible inscription. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 14 November 2019
