What is recorded here

Clearance cairns cluster around the ruined parish church of Killeenemer, marking a graveyard where human bodies may have laid beneath soil long before stone walls rose. The drystone boundary still holds its shape on the east side of the road, though wire fencing now tops part of the northern line. People may have walked this ground for centuries, carrying grief into fields that no longer display their names.
On E side of road, in centre of early ecclesiastical enclosure (13882). Roughly rectangular graveyard (c. 40m E-W; c. 65m N-S) enclosed by drystone wall of large squared stones (H 1.1m; T 1m); wall thicker (T 1.8m) adjacent to entrance stile to W, but reduced to basal courses, topped by wire fence, at W end of N side. Ruin of parish church of Killeenemer (14433) in centre. Interior slightly raised (H 0.3m) above surrounding field level. No gravemarkers noted. Clearance cairns, mostly of small stones, to N, E and S of church; rectangular cairn of large stones to NW (c. 2.75m E-W; c. 1.5m N-S). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
