Graig Wood Motte rises in Newport as a medieval castle mound, the kind of earthwork built to mark power before stone walls became common. It may have watched the wood, stored grain, or sheltered a small household when the area felt exposed. People likely climbed its slope, dropped ropes into cellars, or simply pointed at it and called it home. The mound still holds that much, even when every name and room has disappeared.
