Gourock, Castle Levan

Castle (medieval)

What is recorded here

Castle Levan still stands in Gourock, a medieval ruin reduced to broken stone and ghost stories. It is the kind of place where imagination runs ahead of fact, filling empty rooms with drowned kings and vanished lovers. The castle itself gives no warning, no consent, no proof. It simply waits, leaning into the cliff edge, daring memory to invent what it will not admit.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Gourock, Castle Levan as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built by the Levan family in the 14th century, Castle Levan is remembered as a historic family seat and an example of medieval Scottish architecture. It is important for its long association with the Levan lineage and its preservation as a heritage site.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
