Gordon Castle rose from a windy bog in 1479 into a vast Neoclassical mansion whose façade stretched over 170 metres. Jane, Duchess of Gordon, filled its rooms with political life and cultural brilliance before wartime decay led to much of the house being demolished in 1954. The surviving east wing and medieval tower still stand beside a restored walled garden, preserving the proud footprint of a family that shaped northern Scotland for centuries.
