Good Hope is a twentieth-century lugger recorded near Old Slains Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The name suggests optimism, but the North Sea gives back little and takes without arguing. A lugger must read wind, water and swagger, while the castle watches from the margin like a ghost refusing to leave the story. Hope may have sailed there, carried goods or people, then disappeared into the ordinary churn of lives that no longer remember the deck.
