Gold Castle in Perth and Kinross is not a castle at all but a possible prehistoric barrow, an enclosure of unknown period, and a saddle quern dating from the Neolithic to Bronze Age. It belongs to the dead and the dirt, not to armies or badges. Any grand castle story is invention; the real place is a buried chamber, a boundary stone, and a grinding stone where someone once turned grain into meal.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Gold Castle as Barrow (prehistoric)(possible), Enclosure (period Unknown), Saddle Quern (neolithic) - (bronze Age). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
