Glashedy Island Poitín Cave

Sea cave and historic still place

What is recorded here

Glashedy Island Poitín Cave is a sea cave and historic still place in County Donegal, Ireland. Perhaps water still moves through the cave chest while the island holds its breath. Maybe the men worked past midnight, feeding fire until copper sang. Imagine the smell of spirit and salt hanging in the dark when they left.
A recorded Inishowen account says a cave on Glashedy Island held a working illicit still, distilling equipment, fuel and provisions.
The cave on Glashedy Island was used historically for the illegal production of poitín, with remnants of distilling equipment and supplies found on site. No significant geological details or earlier archaeological use of the cave has been recorded.

Glashedy is an offshore island. This point marks the island, not safe landing or cave access.
