Castlemilk House and Laundry Cottage stand together in Glasgow, listed only as an estate cottage with no date, keeping the boundary between domestic comfort and brutal labour intact. The main house enjoyed gardens and dignity while the smaller cottage served water, soap and repetition for its people. That separation still shows in the shape of the estate: one building for pleasure, one for cleaning what pleasure dirty.
