Gilford Castle rose in the early 1870s for Benjamin Dickson, replacing an older fortress tied to the first proprietors of the land. Its gate lodge, probably designed by William Spence, still stands at the east entrance where coach passengers once arrived from Belfast. The demesne nestles inside a loop of the Bann river, leaving the north as its only true approach. That single chokepoint turned the estate into a place of controlled access, where every visitor must arrive through the same narrow gate.
