Gilbert Elliot and John Stewart blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: In the 18th century this was the Black Bull Inn. In 1726 a murder took place here, when Sir Gilbert Elliot of Stobs drew his sword and stabbed Colonel Stewart of Stewartfield. Much alcohol had been taken and an argument about political matters had arisen. Sir Gilbert escaped and hid in the graveyard later to be smuggled abroad and ultimately pardoned. Sir Gilbert Elliot of Stobs and Colonel John Stewart of Stewartfield were involved in a fatal 1726 duel at the Black Bull Inn over political disagreements; Elliot escaped prosecution and was eventually pardoned.
