In 1973, Gerry Daly left Cabra, Dublin, for Manchester United after Tommy Docherty paid Bohemians twenty thousand pounds. United were relegated that first season, yet Daly helped them return to the top flight and later played in the 1976 FA Cup final. He moved on to Derby County for one hundred and seventy-five thousand pounds, where he scored a penalty on a pitch so poor the spot had to be re-painted during the match. A boy from Cabra became a fixture in English football, scoring one hundred and thirteen goals across five hundred and forty-four appearances.
