Garbh Bealach

Fort

What is recorded here

Garbh Bealach is a small circular fort clinging to the flat top of a steep rocky knoll on Eigg, occupying the entire summit and part of the foot. It may date from the Early Bronze Age to the Pictish period, when people climbed the narrow rock to watch the sea or keep others out. The steep sides still exclude most visitors, but the compact shape suggests a place built for clarity rather than comfort.
Garbh Bealach is shown as a fort on the public map of Highland. The saved point is the map point or the centre of its mapped shape.
