Gameshope, 'peden's Pulpit'

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Gameshope, 'peden's Pulpit' as Covenanters Meeting Place (17th Century), Preaching Site (17th Century), Stone (nil Antiquity). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1km. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Linked to the 17th-century Covenanters, a Presbyterian movement resisting royal interference in religion, the site is traditionally associated with secret Protestant preaching. Local tradition holds that Peden, a prominent Covenanter preacher, may have used the natural stone as a pulpit for clandestine sermons during periods of persecution.
