Gallauns holds two standing stones twenty-two metres apart on the lower slopes of Foilclogh Mountain, overlooking Portmagee Channel. The larger stone rises three and a half metres, tapering to a knife-edge at the top, while two low boulders lie behind it. Macalister once claimed an ogham inscription on the main stone but withdrew the suggestion. The exact purpose remains unclear, yet the alignment across open pasture suggests the stones marked a boundary, a meeting place or a warning to travellers coming from the sea.
Two standing stones, set 22.4m apart NE-SW, are located in pasture on the lower W slopes of Foilclogh Mountain. The site overlooks Portmagee Channel to NW. The larger stone, at SW, is 3.65m high and measures 1.45m x .3m at base. It tapers appreciably along one edge to a width of .5m at the top; NE-SW. Macalister believed that this stone bore an ogham inscription, but he later withdrew this suggestion (1945, 232).
Two low boulders located 3m to the SW measure .6m x .3m and 1m x .9m; their longer axes are aligned NE-SW.
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 196. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
