Gallauns

Standing stone

What is recorded here

One stone is missing from Gallauns. The first survey mapped two; the second mapped one. The loss may be a fall, a removal, or a drawing error, but the gap changed the place from a pair into a loneliness. The remaining gallaun still stands broad and low in boggy pasture, pointing northeast and southwest like a sentence broken in the middle.
Two stones shown on OS 6-inch maps, one now remains. Stone (H 1.45m; 0.85m x 0.62m) is rectangular in plan, long axis NE-SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the stone may have had a ritual or territorial function. No specific folklore or detailed meaning is recorded for this site.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
