Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun is a tall standing stone in Glanleam, County Kerry, trapped inside a much younger fort called Cromwell's Fort. The ancient upright predates the military earthwork by millennia, forcing the later builders either to honour its presence or to ignore it completely. A leaning slab now braces the stone after it shook easily in 1839, proving that human hands have kept this old marker steady through centuries of change.
In pasture. Rectangular stone aligned NNE-SSW (H 2.6m; 1.4m x 0.25m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
