Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun is a 3.4-metre standing stone in Glanleam, County Kerry, predating the surrounding Cromwellian earthwork by millennia. The fort either claimed the ancient marker or ignored it, creating a layered collision where human ambition kept stumbling over older patience. A leaning slab now braces the stone after Chatterton found it shaking in 1839, proving that even timeless things need occasional help staying upright.
In flat tillage. Subrectangular stone of irregular shape (H 3.4m; 1.5m x 0.7m), long axis E-W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
