Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun stands three metres tall inside Cromwell's Fort on the Iveragh Peninsula, forcing a collision between millennia. The prehistoric upright predates the later earthwork by centuries, yet the fort swallowed it without apology. A leaning slab now braces its base after Chatterton found it shaking in 1839, proving human hands still answer the stone's quiet wobble.
In flat arable land. Rectangular stone (H 2.2m; 2.1m x 0.4m) aligned NE-SW, narrowing towards top. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
