Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun was a standing stone beside the Inny and Owroe rivers in County Kerry, Ireland. It has vanished under the plough, leaving no visible trace. The rivers still flow where the stone stood, carrying its absence into the water.
The 'Gallaun' marked on the second edition of the OS map was located immediately S of the juncture of the Inny and Owroe rivers. The land in which it stood has recently been ploughed and there is no visible trace of the stone. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 225. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
