Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallán was a single standing stone on an east-facing slope beside Brookpark House in County Cork. It appeared on the 1904 map but vanished before modern recording, leaving no visible trace. Whatever boundary, memory or warning it marked was erased along with the stone itself.
Not shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Marked 'Gallaun', and shown as single standing stone on 1904 OS 6-inch map. In pasture, on E-facing slope just W of Brookpark House. Removed; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the standing stone at Gallán may have served as a territorial marker or ceremonial monument. Local folklore sometimes associates such stones with early Christian saints or mythical figures, though no specific tradition is recorded for this site.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
