Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallán is a two-metre standing stone in County Cork, Ireland. It leans slightly across rough grazing beside a stream, with smaller packing stones still visible at its base. The stone has watched water flow and grass grow for generations, marking a place people once remembered without writing it down.
In rough grazing, on N side of stream. Stone (H 2m; 0.7m x 0.3m) is subrectangular in plan, with packing stones exposed at base. Long axis WNW-ESE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Likely dating to the Early Christian period, the name "Gallán" may refer to a saint or holy well associated with the stone. Such stones often marked sacred sites or had ritual significance in prehistoric and early medieval religious practice.
