Gaddick Hill medieval motte and bailey castle and post-medieval manor house

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Gaddick Hill bears the buried line of a medieval motte and bailey castle, later reshaped into a post-medieval manor house within Newark and Sherwood. The land may still hide the castle’s wooden scaffold, trodden courtyard and forgotten chambers beneath grass and soil.
The National Heritage List for England records Gaddick Hill medieval motte and bailey castle and post-medieval manor house as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built in the medieval period, likely by a local Norman lord in the 12th or 13th century, Gaddick Hill is important as a rare surviving example of a motte and bailey castle combined with a later manor house, illustrating the evolution of defensive and domestic architecture in the region.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
