Fulacht fia in Killoughane

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Up to the mid-1970s four fulachta fiadh were visible along a 300m stretch of the W bank of the Gaddagh river. This marshy land was subsequently deep-ploughed, and no apparent trace of the sites survive. They were described locally as horseshoe-shaped mounds which were composed of burnt stone. During the levelling of one, a metal 'boat-shaped' object was discovered. The present provenance of this object is unknown. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 433. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
